EDITORS COMMENTS
This front cover illustration is taken from Randolph Caldecott's 1881 adaptation of Lewis Carroll's "The Queen of Hearts" from his renowned series of sixteen picture books. In this charming scene, the regal Queen of Hearts, adorned in a grand dress of red and black, confidently strides across a carpet of playing cards. She proudly brandishes a jam tart, a beloved treat that would soon be the subject of her famous outburst, "Off with their heads!" The Queen's train is held by the hapless Knave of Hearts, who looks on in horror as the Knave of Diamonds, with an arrow tipped with a diamond, aims and shoots an airborne heart. The Knave of Hearts' expression of alarm is a stark contrast to the nonchalant demeanor of the Queen and her court. Caldecott's picture books, published annually in pairs from 1878 until his death in 1886, were a staple of Victorian nursery rhymes and children's literature. Each book retailed for one shilling, making them an affordable and cherished addition to families' collections. This iconic image, showcasing the Queen of Hearts' whimsical world of playing cards, archery, and jam tarts, is a testament to Caldecott's masterful storytelling and illustrative abilities. It continues to captivate audiences of all ages and remains an essential piece of children's literature history.
