In this 17th century Japanese print, Oishi Yoshio, also known as Oishi Kuranosuke, is depicted in a thoughtful moment as he pens a letter on the ceiling of his chambers. The chamberlain of the Ako Domain in Harima Province, now Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, Oishi Yoshio (1659-1703) is best remembered for his role as the leader of the Forty-seven Ronin in their legendary vendetta against the treacherous daimyo Asano Naganori in 1702.
