Old Craven House

Formerly Drury House, it was later rebuilt as Craven House by Lord Craven, and finally turned into a public house, the Queen of Bohemia, named after Lord Cravens unrequited love, Elizabeth of Bohemia, the daughter of James I. It was demolished in 1803, and replaced by the first Olympic Theatre

1803 Bohemia Craven Demolished Drury Finally Named Olympic Rebuilt Replaced Turned Unrequited Elizabeth

EDITORS COMMENTS
Old Craven House, formerly known as Drury House, stands proudly in this vintage photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library. This historic building, located in London, underwent a significant transformation throughout the centuries. Originally built in the late 16th or early 17th century, it was later rebuilt in the late 17th century by the Earl of Craven. The earl, who was deeply in love with Elizabeth of Bohemia, the daughter of King James I, named the house after her. Their love was, however, unrequited, adding a poignant touch to the history of this grand residence. The house, with its elegant facade and spacious gardens, was a sight to behold. It remained in the Craven family until the early 18th century when it was turned into a public house, retaining its romantic name, The Queen of Bohemia. The building, with its rich history and allure, continued to captivate visitors for decades. Unfortunately, the Old Craven House did not last forever. In 1803, it was demolished to make way for a new development. The first Olympic Theatre was built on its site, marking the end of an era for this historic building. Despite its demise, the memory of Old Craven House and its intriguing past live on, serving as a reminder of the fascinating history that lies hidden within the streets of London.
