Curiosity Dickens Dispersing Morning Nell Promoting Promotion Rode Slowly Travelling Waxworks
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment when Nell, the young and vulnerable heroine of Charles Dickens' classic novel "The Old Curiosity Shop," takes to the streets of a bustling town to promote the traveling waxworks show of Mrs. Jarley. Dressed in simple clothing and carrying a woven basket filled with handbills, Nell rides slowly through the town on a horse-drawn cart, her expression determined and focused. The Old Curiosity Shop, the setting for much of the novel, is a quirky and mysterious establishment run by Nell's grandfather, where they had taken refuge after falling on hard times. Mrs. Jarley, a kind and compassionate woman, had taken Nell and her grandfather under her wing, providing them with a place to live and work. Nell's role in the waxworks show is an essential one, as she uses her youthful charm and charisma to draw in crowds and generate excitement for the unique and intriguing displays. The date of this photograph is estimated to be around 1850, a time when Dickens' works were enjoying great popularity, and traveling shows like Mrs. Jarley's were a common sight on the streets of towns and cities across England. The image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when stories like "The Old Curiosity Shop" were a source of wonder and delight for audiences of all ages.
