EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures the essence of tradition and community spirit as it depicts a group of Pearly Kings and Queens gathered in the quaint town of Hythe, near Southampton, Hampshire, England during the 1950s. The Pearly Kings and Queens are an historic and unique British institution, originating in the East End of London in the late 1800s. The tradition began when Henry Croft, a street sweeper, covered himself in pearl buttons to raise funds for a charity event, and the trend continued with others in the community joining in. The Pearly Kings and Queens of Hythe can be seen here proudly displaying their pearly attire, adorned with thousands of pearl buttons, as they gather for a photograph. The women, known as Pearly Queens, wear dresses and headdresses, while the men, known as Pearly Kings, wear shirts, waistcoats, and trousers. The pearls are not only a symbol of their status but also a way to raise funds for charitable causes. Hythe, a picturesque town on the South Coast of England, has a rich history and is known for its connections to the sea. The presence of the Pearly Kings and Queens adds an extra layer of charm and tradition to the town's history. This photograph is a reminder of a bygone era, a time when community spirit was strong, and traditions were cherished. It is a snapshot of a moment in time, frozen forever, and a testament to the enduring appeal of the Pearly Kings and Queens and their unique place in British history.
