EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Goodyear FG-1D Corsair, registration number N4719C, moments before its tragic crash at the Lancaster Airfield in California on May 28, 1965. The image, taken shortly before the accident, shows the iconic warplane adorned with race number 2, as pilot Lynn E. Winney prepared for the upcoming Los Angeles Air Races. Unfortunately, this promising day took a devastating turn as Winney lost control during an aerobatic maneuver, causing the FG-1D to crash into the desert near Lancaster. The impact was immediate and catastrophic, with the Corsair sustaining complete destruction and a subsequent fire erupting. Tragically, Winney did not survive the accident, marking a heartbreaking end to his day at the races. The National Transportation Safety Board later reported that the cause of the crash was a loss of control during an inverted roll, but the exact circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the risks and uncertainties inherent in the thrilling world of air racing, and the ultimate sacrifice made by those who dared to push the limits of aviation.
