EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, two Handley Page HPR.1 Marathon T.11 aircraft, G-ALVY (msn 104, ex XA252) and G-AMGR (msn 112, ex XA269), are seen parked side by side at Shoreham Airfield. The Marathon T.11 was a military transport version of the Handley Page Type 1 Marathon, which was designed and manufactured by the Handley Page Aircraft Company in the late 1940s. Both of these aircraft had previously served with the Royal Air Force's No.2 Air Navigation School at RAF Thorney Island and No.1 Air Navigation School at RAF Topcliffe. By circa 1960, they had been retired from military service and were stored at Shoreham, where they were eventually scrapped by February 1962. The Handley Page Marathon was a versatile aircraft that saw service in various roles during its operational life. It was used for transporting personnel, equipment, and supplies, as well as for training purposes. The Marathon's distinctive streamlined shape and large wing area made it an efficient and capable aircraft for long-range flights. This photograph captures a moment in time when these two historic aircraft were no longer in active service, but still stood proudly on the tarmac as a reminder of their important role in the history of aviation. The image evokes a sense of nostalgia for the golden age of flight and the pioneering spirit of the early days of air transport. The Handley Page Marathon was an important part of the post-war aviation landscape, and its legacy continues to be felt today. This photograph is a testament to the enduring appeal of these iconic aircraft and the rich history of flight.
