EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Kay Gyroplane Type 33-1, registration number G-ACVA (msn 1002), at the Fifty Years of Flying Exhibition held at RAF Hendon in 1951. The Kay Gyroplane, manufactured by Gyroplanes Ltd., is a remarkable aviation innovation that combines the best elements of both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. G-ACVA was first flown on the 18th of February 1935, making it an early pioneer in the field of autogyro technology. After a service life that spanned over a decade, the gyroplane's final recorded flight took place at Perth on the 16th of August 1947. Following its retirement from active service, G-ACVA was presented to the Museum of Transport in Glasgow, where it remains an important piece of aviation history. Gyroplanes Ltd. built a total of three autogyros: the first, a Type 32/1 (msn 1001), was first flown at RAF Leuchars in 1932 but remained unregistered. The third, the second Type 33 (msn 1003), was not completed, though it did get registered as G-ACVB. The Kay Gyroplane Type 33/1 G-ACVA in this photograph stands as a testament to the groundbreaking work in aviation engineering that took place during the early to mid-20th century.
