EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken at the 1951 SBAC Farnborough Air Show, showcases the Royal Air Force Auster WJ316, a one-of-a-kind observation aircraft based on the Auster 6. The Auster WJ316 made its first flight in August 1950, featuring an enlarged tail to improve its performance as an Air Observation Post (AOP) aircraft. Sadly, this prototype met its end on September 29, 1955, after being written off. In the background of this image, aviation enthusiasts can spot two other notable aircraft. The Avro Proteus-Lincoln test-bed, SX972, can be seen on the left. The Proteus-Lincoln was a maritime patrol and test-bed aircraft, which first flew in 1949. On the right, the Blackburn and General Universal Freighter WF320 is visible. This versatile transport aircraft, which first flew in 1949, was used for both military and civilian purposes. The 1951 SBAC Farnborough Air Show was a significant event in the aviation world, and this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing three unique aircraft that contributed to the evolution of flight and transportation technology.
