EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Royal Air Force (RAF) Percival P.56 Provost T.1 XF912 (msn PAC/56/421) in service during the late 1950s. Delivered to the RAF on the 27th of March 1956, this particular Provost trainer aircraft served the British armed forces for a number of years before being scrapped during 1962 at No.71 Maintenance Unit (MU) RAF Bicester. The Percival P.56 Provost was a single-engine, two-seat advanced trainer aircraft, designed to provide pilot training for the RAF and other air forces around the world. XF912, with its distinctive round canopy and tailfin, is seen here taxing on the tarmac, likely preparing for another training sortie. The Percival Aircraft Company, founded in 1934, produced a range of aircraft types for both military and civilian use. However, this photograph focuses on the RAF's use of the Provost T.1, an important part of the organization's training fleet during the post-World War II era. The Provost's versatility and reliability made it a popular choice for pilot training, with over 1,600 examples built between 1953 and 1958. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of aviation transport within the British armed services, showcasing the Royal Air Force's commitment to training the next generation of pilots and maintaining a strong air presence. The Percival P.56 Provost T.1 XF912, with its unique identity and rich history, remains an essential piece of aviation history.
