EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a United States Air Force Fairchild C-119C-22-FA with the serial number 53-2539, affectionately known as "Oriental Beauty" (MSN 10497), during its service with the 817th Troop Carrier Squadron, 403rd Troop Carrier Group, and 483rd Troop Carrier Wing at Camp Page (K-47 air base, Chunchon) in 1953. The C-119, a versatile cargo and troop transport aircraft, is seen in the process of unloading lettuce as part of Operation Ironage. The history of 53-2539 is rich and intriguing. After its service with the US Air Force, this aircraft was loaned to and flown by the French Air Force in French Indochina, adorned with their colors. Upon its return to the US, it was reassigned to the 356th Troop Carrier Squadron, 907th Troop Carrier Group. Eventually, it was disposed of to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center on December 4, 1965, and declared excess on May 6, 1968. This photograph is a testament to the C-119's role in military operations and its versatility in transporting essential supplies, such as fresh produce, to support the troops. The image captures a moment in history, showcasing the collaboration between military forces and the vital role of logistics in military operations.
