EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the United States Air Force's (USAF) General Dynamics F-111A 65-5701, also known as A1-19-28, during its transit to and from the 1967 Paris Air Show at RAF Wethersfield in Suffolk, England. As the first production aircraft of its kind, 65-5701 bore the programme number 199. The F-111A, a versatile and innovative military aircraft, was manufactured by General Dynamics. In this image, we see the F-111A in flight against the backdrop of the English countryside, with the Paris Air Show programme number 199 clearly visible on its fuselage. The aircraft's distinctive design, featuring variable sweep wings, was a marvel of aviation technology during the late 1960s. Tragically, on 2 January 1968, 65-5701 met with an unfortunate end during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California. A fire broke out in the gun weapon bay, forcing the crew to eject safely using the aircraft's ejection module. Despite the unfortunate incident, the F-111A program continued, eventually leading to the successful deployment of this advanced aircraft in various military operations.
