EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph captures the USAF North American EB-45A Tornado 47-0014 of the 29th Air Material Squadron (AMS) and 29th Air Material Group (AMG) at Mitchell Field in 1948. The EB-45A Tornado was a twin-engine, propeller-driven electronic warfare and reconnaissance aircraft used by the United States Air Force. The history of this specific aircraft is marked by a series of events. In August 1951, 47-0014 crash-landed at Norton Air Force Base in California. Later, in 1952, it was reportedly assigned to the 84th Bomb Squadron and 47th Bomb Group. However, its tenure with these units was short-lived, as the aircraft was written off in New Mexico on February 5, 1952. The EB-45A Tornado was a crucial asset in the USAF's electronic warfare and reconnaissance capabilities during the post-World War II era. Despite its eventful history, this photograph serves as a testament to the aircraft's service and the dedication of the men and women who operated it. This image is from the Mary Evans Picture Library and dates back to 1948. It provides a unique glimpse into the history of military aviation and the role of the North American EB-45A Tornado in the United States Air Force.
