EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the Vought-Sikorsky VS-44A seaplane N41881, affectionately known as "Mother Goose," is moored at the Avalon jetty in Long Beach. This image captures a moment in time during the early 1960s when Avalon Air Transport (AAT) utilized this magnificent aircraft for scheduled and chartered services to Catalina Island. Dick Probert and Walter von Kleinsmid, visionary leaders of AAT, recognized the potential of the VS-44A in catering to the burgeoning tourist trade on Catalina Island. To complement their existing fleet of Grumman Goose amphibians, they named this particular VS-44A "Mother Goose," and made plans to utilize it for summer travel. During the winter months, N41881 would undergo necessary maintenance to ensure her continued reliability and safety. AAT, later renamed Catalina Air Lines, continued to operate the VS-44A until the late 1960s, providing essential air transportation services to the picturesque island getaway. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, where seaplanes like the VS-44A played a vital role in connecting people to their desired destinations. The serene beauty of the scene, with the VS-44A gracefully tied to the jetty, is a testament to the enduring allure of aviation history.
