EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Westland-Sikorsky WS-55 Series 1 helicopter with the registration number G-AOCF (msn WA56), which spent an eventful career at Luton Airport. From its first service with British European Airways Helicopters Ltd (BEAHL) in September 1955 until April 1964, the helicopter was named Sir Lionel. In April 1964, there was a change of ownership and transfer to BEA Helicopters Ltd. In October 1966, the helicopter was sold to Autair, and just a few months later, it was leased to Libya and registered as 5A-DBA. After its return to Autair in March 1967, it was sold to Bristow Helicopters Ltd in December 1968 and then transferred to Helicopter Rentals in Bermuda, where it was registered as VR-BDB. The helicopter was also leased in Canada as C-GSFC, but the registration was not taken up. The exact date of its written-off is unknown. This Westland-Sikorsky WS-55 Series 1 helicopter, with its rich history and various registrations, is a testament to the dynamic and ever-changing world of aviation. Its story begins at Luton Airport in 1955 and continues through various ownerships and leases, ultimately ending in an unknown fate. A true aviation treasure, this helicopter's legacy continues to inspire and captivate aviation enthusiasts.
