Fable Fables Fontaine Mythology Persuade Philomel Prefers Remain Sheep Shepherdess Sister Solitude Myth Progne

EDITORS COMMENTS
Philomel and Procne - The Longing of Sisterly Bond: A Mythological Tale of Solitude and Persuasion In this evocative 1870 print, we witness a poignant moment from Greek mythology, as depicted by the renowned French artist, Paul Lafargue. The scene portrays Procne (left), with a concerned expression, earnestly trying to persuade her sister Philomel (right) to abandon her solitary life and return to the city. The sisters' story, a popular fable in ancient Greece, is one of heartache and transformation. Philomel, a shepherdess, was once a beloved maiden, admired for her beauty and song. However, she was cruelly abducted by the god Tereus, who then married her sister Procne. In an act of vengeance and protection, Procne and her lover, Procne's brother-in-law Itys, plotted to kill Tereus and replace him with a mock Tereus, made from the flesh of Itys. The sisters' deception was discovered, leading to a tragic chain of events. In this print, we see Procne, dressed in elegant robes, reaching out to her sister, who remains resolute in her solitude. Philomel, now a nightingale, perches on a rock, her feathers a stark contrast to her former life as a shepherdess. Her eyes are closed, lost in thought, as she refuses to be swayed by her sister's pleas. The print, with its lush greenery and ethereal quality, encapsulates the bittersweet nature of sisterly bonds and the longing for a past that can never be reclaimed. The historical context, coupled with the mythological narrative, makes for a captivating and thought-provoking piece.
