EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment from the Practical Seamanship class held onboard the Training Ship Wellesley, located on the River Tyne at North Shields, Northumberland, in the late 19th or early 20th century. The Training Ship Wellesley was established in 1874 by local businessmen, including James Hall, as a charitable institution to provide shelter and training for Tyneside waifs and young men, preparing them for naval service. The boys in the photograph are intently focused on their task, rigging and maneuvering a large model boat, as their supervisor looks on approvingly. The establishment of the Training Ship Wellesley was a response to the poverty and social issues prevalent in the region during the Victorian era. Many young boys found themselves in workhouses or orphanages, with few opportunities for education or skills training. The Training Ship offered a valuable alternative, providing not only shelter and food but also the opportunity to learn practical seamanship skills and gain valuable experience on the water. The photograph transports us back to the 1870s, a time when the institution was at the height of its success. The boys are dressed in their uniforms, and the deck of the ship is bustling with activity. The model boat, transported from the real ship, provides a valuable learning tool, allowing the boys to gain hands-on experience in sailing and navigation. The Training Ship Wellesley continued to operate until a fire in 1914 forced it to move ashore and become the Wellesley Nautical School. The photograph serves as a reminder of the important role that charitable institutions played in providing opportunities for young people during a time of great social need.
