Queen Mary Ocean Liner, supplying her 1000 needs

The Queen Mary, then known as Hull Number 534, had been halted between 1931 and 1934 due to the Great Depression of the 1930s, but the merger of Cunard and White Star Line and a nine-and-a-half million pound government loan saved the vessel. Throughout Great Britian two hundred firms in sixty cities and towns had the tremendous task of fitting the Queen Mary with all the necessary items to complete the ship on time, for the launch the same year in September 1934. Boiler drums, turbines and pumps been made at different foundaries and interior furniture to craftsmen in factories up and down the country. Date: 1934

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the industrious spirit of Great Britain during the 1930s as it rallied to complete the Queen Mary Ocean Liner. The ship, then known as Hull Number 534, had been halted due to the economic hardships of the Great Depression. However, the merger of Cunard and White Star Line, along with a nine-and-a-half million pound government loan, breathed new life into the project. Two hundred firms in sixty cities and towns across the country took on the monumental task of fitting the Queen Mary with all the necessary items to complete the ship on time for her launch in September 1934. Boiler drums, turbines, and pumps were manufactured at various foundries, while interior furniture was crafted in factories up and down the land. The men and workers in this image are a testament to the resilience and determination of the British people during this challenging time. The boiler drums, forged in Sheffield, are being transported to the shipyard, while turbines and pumps from Kidderminster are being carefully loaded onto a truck. In Clydebank, Scotland, carpets are being woven on the Clydeside, adding warmth and elegance to the ship's interiors. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the collaborative effort that went into constructing the Queen Mary, a feat of engineering and industry that continues to captivate audiences to this day. The steamship, a true marvel of the oceanic world, was a symbol of hope and progress during a time of economic uncertainty, showcasing the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the British people.
