EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the haunting beauty of the Capuchin Crypt in Rome, Italy, dating back to the late 19th century. The crypt, located within the Capuchin Monastery in the historic Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini church, is renowned for its unique decoration - the walls completely covered in the skulls and bones of over 4,000 Capuchin friars. In this image, three skeletons, dressed in monk's clothes, are attached to the wall in a standing position, each holding a cross. One skeleton lies in a cove, also holding a cross, adding to the solemn and reflective atmosphere. The intricately designed ceiling, made entirely of bones, further accentuates the crypt's macabre yet fascinating history. The Capuchin Order, a branch of the Franciscan Order, was founded in 1525, and the crypt was created between 1590 and 1650 to honor the friars who had lived and died in the monastery. The crypt serves as a reminder of the transience of life and the ultimate goal of Capuchin monks - to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi and dedicate their lives to God. This photograph, part of the Boswell collection, Slide number 48, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to contemplate the history and significance of this unique and captivating place.
