EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when the first Boeing 707-320C freighter, registered G-ALYP, touched down at London Heathrow Airport on March 31, 1965. The Boeing 707-320C was a significant development in the world of aviation, marking the beginning of the jet age for cargo transportation. The 707-320C was a military derivative of the successful Boeing 707 passenger jet, which had been in service since the late 1950s. BOAC, the British Overseas Airways Corporation, was one of the first airlines to recognize the potential of the 707-320C as a freighter and placed an order for two of these aircraft in 1964. The 707-320C was a versatile and efficient freighter, capable of carrying large payloads over long distances. Its twin engines provided ample power for heavy lifting, and its spacious cargo hold could be easily configured to accommodate various types of cargo. The aircraft's range and payload capacity made it an ideal choice for long-haul cargo operations. The arrival of the 707-320C at Heathrow marked a new era in air cargo transportation. Its introduction allowed BOAC to expand its freight services and compete more effectively with other airlines that were also beginning to adopt jet freighters. The 707-320C went on to serve BOAC faithfully for many years, playing a crucial role in the growth of the airline's cargo business. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the aviation industry in the 1960s. It captures a moment of history when a new era of cargo transportation was born, and the possibilities for the future seemed endless.
