1632 1691 Common Exeter Judge Justice Member Parliament Pleas

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Henry Pollexfen (1632-1691): A Prominent Figure in English Law and Politics This striking portrait captures Sir Henry Pollexfen, an influential judge and statesman of the English Restoration era. Born in Exeter, Devon, in 1632, Pollexfen rose to prominence through his legal and political pursuits. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and the Inner Temple, where he was called to the bar in 1656. Pollexfen's legal career began in earnest when he was appointed a sergeant-at-law in 1660, following the restoration of the monarchy. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and fair judge, and in 1662, he was appointed a justice of the Court of Common Pleas, a position he held until his death in 1691. In addition to his legal career, Pollexfen was also an active member of Parliament, representing Exeter from 1661 to 1679. He was known for his strong stance on religious and political issues, and was a vocal opponent of the Test Act, which required officeholders to take communion in the Church of England. Despite his opposition to some of the government's policies, Pollexfen maintained a close relationship with King Charles II and was knighted in 1671 in recognition of his services to the crown. He continued to serve as a justice of the Court of Common Pleas until his death in 1691. This portrait, dating from the late 17th century, provides a glimpse into the life of a remarkable figure in English history. Sir Henry Pollexfen's legal and political achievements, as well as his unwavering commitment to his beliefs, make him an enduring symbol of the era in which he lived.
