EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir John Lawrence, 1st Baron Lawrence (1811-1879), was a prominent British politician and statesman of the 19th century. Born in England, Lawrence rose to prominence through his distinguished military and administrative career in India. He served in various capacities under the British East India Company and the British Crown, including as the Chief Commissioner of the North-Western Provinces and Oudh, and as the Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1864 to 1869. This colored engraving, created in 1892 by John Laird Mair for The Universal History, captures Sir John Lawrence in his later years. He is depicted in profile, with a stern expression and a well-groomed moustache. Lawrence is dressed in the formal attire of a British nobleman, including a red robe and a star of the Order of the Bath on his chest. The insignia of the Order of the Star of India and the Order of the Indian Empire are also visible on his shoulders. Lawrence was a controversial figure in his time due to his firm stance on colonialism and his role in implementing policies that led to the subjugation of Indian princes and the expansion of British rule. He was knighted in 1858 and created a Baronet in 1866, and was later raised to the peerage as Baron Lawrence in 1879. Lawrence's political career spanned over four decades, and his legacy continues to be debated among historians and scholars of colonialism and British imperial history.
