EDITORS COMMENTS
This line drawing depicts The Soosoo of the Ganges, a rare and enigmatic river dolphin native to the Indian subcontinent. The Soosoo, also known as the Ganges River Dolphin, is a unique member of the Delphinidae family, which includes oceanic dolphins, and the Platanistoidea superfamily, which includes other river dolphins. This fascinating mammal is an odontocete, meaning it is a toothed cetacean, and is further classified as a placental mammal, belonging to the order Cetacea and the class Mammalia. The Soosoo is a distinctive creature, with a bulbous forehead and a long, curved, and upturned beak. Its body is streamlined for efficient swimming in the murky waters of the Ganges and other major rivers in India and Bangladesh. This image is taken from Robert Hamilton's Naturalist's Library, volume XXVII, published in 1836. Hamilton was a prominent Scottish naturalist and artist who traveled extensively throughout Asia, documenting the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The Soosoo is an important cultural symbol in India, where it is revered and protected in some areas. However, this elusive and endangered species faces numerous threats, including habitat loss, pollution, and accidental entanglement in fishing nets. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the Soosoo and ensure its continued survival in the wild. This line drawing serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the unique creatures that inhabit it.
