EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of determined National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) members during their Pilgrimage to London in June and July of 1913. The Pilgrimage was a mass demonstration organized by the NUWSS, also known as the Suffragettes, to raise awareness for women's right to vote. In this image, the weary but resolute group is seen taking a break from their long journey along the Great North Road in the town of Barnsley, Yorkshire on July 4, 1913. Some members can be seen carrying the distinctive NUWSS satchels, while others proudly display the raffia cockleshell badges pinned to their hats. The cockleshell badge was a symbol of the suffrage movement, representing the drowning of the suffragette Emily Davison during the Epsom Derby in 1913. This powerful photograph offers a glimpse into the sacrifices and perseverance of the suffragettes during their historic fight for women's suffrage in the United Kingdom.
