EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a piece of historical significance: the N.W.S.P.U Suffragette Regalia Ribbon from the Great Women's Sunday Demonstration held on 21st June 1908 in Hyde Park. The ribbon, produced by Toye & Co. of Theobalds Road, London, was a symbol of the suffragette movement, representing the fight for women's rights and suffrage. Mrs. Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, a prominent figure in the suffragette movement, was responsible for choosing the ribbon's distinctive colors - purple, white, and green. She also designed the Speakers Brooch, which is depicted in the image. The Speakers Brooch is made of white moire or watered silk, with a purple and green bow at the top. The word "Speaker" is woven in green, and the letters "N.W.S.P.U" are woven in purple. These elements are encircled by a gold metal wreath of laurels, symbolizing victory. The Great Women's Sunday Demonstration was a significant event in the suffragette movement, with thousands of women gathering in Hyde Park to demand the right to vote. The N.W.S.P.U regalia, including the ribbon and Speakers Brooch, were worn by the speakers and leaders of the movement as a symbol of their commitment and unity. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of the suffragette movement and the powerful symbols that fueled their fight for change.
