EDITORS COMMENTS
Tabula Hospitalis: A Testament to Ancient Roman Hospitality and Generosity This exquisite bronze tabula, or tablet, dates back to the 1st century AD and is a testament to the spirit of hospitality and generosity that once thrived in the ancient Roman world. Discovered in Clunia, a Roman settlement in the Burgos province of Castile and Leon, Spain, this tabula is now proudly displayed at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid. The inscription on the front face of the tablet describes an agreement, or pact, between the prefect Gaius Terentius Basso and the Lunienses, the inhabitants of Luni, a Roman colony in present-day Luna, Italy. The agreement, made in the year 40 AD, granted the Lunienses certain privileges and rights within the Roman Empire. The text is written in Latin and begins with the words "Tabula Hospitalis," which translates to "Table of Hospitality." This name reflects the importance of hospitality in ancient Roman culture, where guests were considered sacred and were to be treated with the utmost respect and generosity. The tabula is a valuable example of epigraphy, the study of inscribed texts from the past. It provides insight into the social and political structures of the Roman Empire during this period and sheds light on the relationships between different Roman colonies and settlements. The intricately detailed bronze tablet is a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of the Roman world, and serves as a reminder of the enduring values of hospitality and generosity that continue to shape our modern world.
