Thanet VAD Motor Transport Group

Thanet VAD Motor Transport Group and stretcher bearers outside The Yarrow Home for Convalescent Children (date - journal). Sir Alfred Yarrow opened this home in 1894. In late 1914 the Committee of Management offered the Home to the military authorities as a military hospital, entirely staffed and paid for. This arrangement continued until c. August 1916 when the hospital was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities. Major Powell-Cotton was the Area VAD Transport Officer in Thanet, responsible for the transport of patients from their arrival on ambulance trains at local stations to the nine VAD hospitals in the area. Between 1914 and 1916 he was assisted in this by the Yarrow Stretcher Bearers. This commemorative photograph was taken at the time the Yarrow authorities stopped running the hospital in August 1916. The photograph was taken in front of the main building. Today (2014) this building is part of East Kent College, Broadstairs. The men in the photograph are wearing YH armbands. Major Powell-Cottons ambulance Q2 is on the left. He converted his Renault car into this ambulane in September 1914. He is sitting on the left hand side of the front seat. Date: 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Thanet Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Motor Transport Group and stretcher bearers outside The Yarrow Home for Convalescent Children in Broadstairs, in the summer of 1916. The home, founded by Sir Alfred Yarrow in 1894, had been transformed into a military hospital in late 1914, entirely staffed and funded by the Yarrow Committee of Management. The arrangement continued until the hospital was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities around August 1916. Major Powell-Cotton, the Area VAD Transport Officer in Thanet, is seen here overseeing the transport of patients from their arrival on ambulance trains at local stations to the nine VAD hospitals in the area. He is pictured with his Yarrow Home stretcher bearers, all wearing distinctive YH armbands. Major Powell-Cotton's ambulance, Q2, is parked to the left, converted from a Renault car in September 1914. The photograph was taken just as the Yarrow authorities were withdrawing from running the hospital. Today, this historic building is part of East Kent College in Broadstairs. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the crucial role that local communities and volunteers played in supporting the war effort during World War I.
