EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic Boeing VB-17G Flying Fortress N207EV, affectionately known as "Shady Lady," during a covert operation in the early 1990s. Registered as N809Z, this aircraft was once a part of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) fleet, with its military serial number being 44-83785 and manufacturing serial number 32426. The Flying Fortress, a legendary aircraft from World War II, was repurposed for intelligence gathering and special missions. In this instance, it was used to drop scientists and agents into an abandoned Soviet scientific station in the Arctic Circle. Once their mission was complete, the Shady Lady returned to pick them up using the innovative Fulton Recovery system, a method of recovering personnel and equipment from the ground without the need for a landing. The Flying Fortress's intriguing history is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of aviation technology. This photograph, from The Tony Lovelock Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the secretive world of aviation and intelligence operations, making it a fascinating addition to any collection.
