EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Canadair CL-13B Sabre Mk. 6, registration N86EX (msn 1489, ex SAAF 380), during its appearance at the Las Vegas Golden Air Tattoo on 26 April 1997. The Canadair Sabre, a versatile and iconic jet fighter, is seen here in its elegant and powerful form, adorned with the distinctive markings of the South African Air Force. Unfortunately, this image holds a tragic history. Just over two weeks after the Las Vegas event, on 1 June 1997, N86EX crashed during a solo aerobatic display at Broomfield, Colorado, resulting in the unfortunate loss of the pilot's life. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, but it marked a somber end to the aircraft's vibrant aviation career. The Canadair CL-13B Sabre Mk. 6, a variant of the original Sabre jet fighter, was a popular choice among private owners and air display teams due to its impressive performance and agility. This particular aircraft had an extensive history, having served in the South African Air Force before being exported to the United States. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the thrill and excitement of aviation, as well as the inherent risks involved in flying. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Canadair Sabre and the brave pilots who have flown it.
