EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored engraving on steel depicts two fascinating European birds, the Eurasian Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris) and the Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla). The intricately detailed image is based on a drawing by the skilled naturalist artist Edouard Travies, as featured in the Richards New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837. The Treecreeper, with its distinctive zebra-like stripes and curved beak, is shown perched on the trunk of a tree, its body coiled in a spiral position as it clings to the bark. Known for their unique climbing behavior, Treecreepers move up tree trunks in a spiral motion, using their long, curved beaks to probe for insects hidden in the bark. The Wryneck, on the other hand, is shown with its neck twisted to one side, a posture it adopts when threatened. This bird is known for its ability to twist its neck in a serpentine motion, making it an intriguing sight for observers. Wrynecks are ground-dwelling birds that feed primarily on insects, reptiles, and amphibians. This stunning engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time, providing a glimpse into the natural history of these birds over 180 years ago. The intricate lines and vibrant colors bring the birds to life, making this a cherished piece for any ornithology or natural history collection.
