EDITORS COMMENTS
War Wounds Slowly Mending: The Careful Rebuilding and Restoration of Devastated Towns in France after World War I This evocative montage of sketches by Helen McKie captures the meticulous process of rebuilding and restoring the towns in Northern France that were ravaged during the First World War. The center image showcases workmen diligently repairing one of the old houses in the Grand Place at Arras. Despite the extensive damage, great care was taken to preserve these picturesque 16th-century structures as close to their original state as possible. The second sketch illustrates the vast expanse of new houses that have sprung up in the countryside. Though the signs of war are still present in the form of disused huts, ruins, unused shells, and barbed wire, the work of rapid reconstruction is in full swing. The third image depicts the planting of new trees along the road where nothing but the dead stumps of old ones remain. This act of nature's regeneration mirrors the human effort to restore the devastated land. Lastly, an old sleeping hut has been converted into an estaminet for workmen, providing a temporary shelter and a sense of community amidst the chaos of reconstruction. This poignant montage, dated 1922, offers a glimpse into the painstaking process of healing the wounds of war and bringing new life to the towns of France.
