The French Guard, led by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte himself, charged towards the British forces under the command of the Duke of Wellington, represented by the figure on horseback in the background. Among the British troops, the Highlanders, clad in their distinctive tartan kilts and feathers, are prominently displayed, having successfully repelled the French Guard's attack at the Haye Sainte farm. The scene is rendered with meticulous detail by the Dutch artist J A Langendyk, working after the original painting by an unknown artist. The image was published by J M Van Os en Compagnie, adding to its historical significance.
