The Wharf, Sutton Courtney - home of Herbert Asquith

The country retreat of Prime Minister Herbert Asquith at Sutton Courtney, Berkshire (now in Oxfordshire after boundary changes in 1974). n 1912 the Prime Minister H. H. Asquith chose The Wharf (which he built in 1913) and the adjoining Walton House for his country residence. Asquith and his large family spent weekends at The Wharf where his wife Margot held court over bridge and tennis. She converted the old barn directly on the river which served for accommodation for the overflow of her many weekend parties. A painting of the period by Sir John Lavery (now in the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin) shows Elizabeth Asquith and her young friends lounging in boats by the riverside. Asquith signed the declaration that took Britain into the First World War here. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Wharf at Sutton Courtney: A Historic Retreat of Prime Minister Herbert Asquith This evocative photograph captures the picturesque Wharf at Sutton Courtney, a charming riverside residence that once served as the country retreat for British Prime Minister, Herbert Henry Asquith. Built in 1913, The Wharf and the adjacent Walton House became Asquith's beloved weekend sanctuary, offering respite from the political pressures of London. Asquith's wife, Margot, presided over the estate, hosting grand bridge and tennis parties for their extensive family and friends. The old barn on the riverbank, now converted into accommodation, played host to the overflow of weekend guests. A painting from the period by Sir John Lavery, now housed in the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, depicts Elizabeth Asquith and her young friends lounging in boats by the riverside, capturing the idyllic atmosphere of the estate. History was made at The Wharf on August 4, 1914, when Asquith signed the declaration that took Britain into the First World War. The significance of this moment is etched into the fabric of this historic property, a poignant reminder of the weighty decisions that were made within its walls. The Wharf at Sutton Courtney stands as a testament to the rich history of its former residents, offering a glimpse into the lives of a prominent political family and their cherished country retreat.
