Anthropology Arrows Bows Ceylon Cloths Gatherers Hunter Lanka Lankan Loin Peoples Warriors Wild Veddahs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a group of Wild Men, or Veddahs, from Sri Lanka in their traditional attire, circa 1908. The Veddahs are an indigenous ethnic group related to the Austro-Asiatic peoples found in various parts of southern Asia. Once numbering in the thousands, their population had dwindled to approximately 2500 individuals as of 2002. These men are depicted as hunters, dressed in minimal clothing made of animal hides, adorned with beads and other natural adornments. They carry bows and arrows, the essential tools for their livelihood as gatherers and warriors. The Veddahs have lived in harmony with nature for centuries, roaming the forests of Sri Lanka and practicing a semi-nomadic lifestyle. The Veddahs have a rich cultural heritage and are believed to be the original inhabitants of Sri Lanka, predating the Sinhalese and Tamil civilizations. Their unique way of life, which has remained largely unchanged for generations, has attracted the attention of anthropologists and researchers from around the world. Despite their small numbers and the challenges they face in the modern world, the Veddahs continue to hold on to their traditions and customs. This photograph serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the cultural heritage and diversity of indigenous peoples, and the need to respect and protect their rights to their ancestral lands and way of life.
