Women working at convalescent remount depot, WW1
Scenes at a convalescent army remount, where forty to fifty hunting women were employed. The depot was under the District Remount Officer for Berkshire, Mr Cecil Aldin (the well-known animal and sporting artist and also Master of the South Berks Hunt) who was responsible for the control, organisation and care of the horses. All the stable work and exercise was done by women, who were mostly hunting women from every county in England. Photographs show the stables and the headwoman who oversaw each depot. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at a Convalescent Remount Depot during World War I, where women played a crucial role in the care and well-being of horses. In 1915, under the supervision of District Remount Officer Cecil Aldin, a renowned animal and sporting artist and Master of the South Berks Hunt, forty to fifty hunting women were employed to carry out stable work and exercise duties. The horses at the depot were essential for the British Army, providing mounts for soldiers returning from the front lines to regain their strength and mobility. The women in this photograph, hailing from every county in England, worked tirelessly to ensure the horses were well-fed, exercised, and in top condition. Their expertise in handling horses, gained from their experience in the hunting field, proved invaluable during this time. The headwoman, shown in the image, oversaw each depot and managed the day-to-day operations. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the vital contributions made by women during the war effort, as they took on roles previously held by men. The Convalescent Remount Depots provided a valuable opportunity for women to make a difference and demonstrate their skills, while also offering a sense of purpose and community during a time of great upheaval. The image is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the women who played a crucial role in supporting the war effort from the home front.
