WWI - Wearing a Derby Armlet - Comic Postcard
Bow-wow! I wonder what group shes in?! The first of the two things this postcard refers to is the Derby Armlet. In 1915, it was obvious that volunteers alone would not be enough to fill the armys needs and in the near future some form of conscription would be necessary. Men who wore the armband (it was a voluntary scheme started by Lord Derby) promised to join the Army when called upon to do so. The second aspect of the card is the cheeky connection this chap is making between his Armlet and a passing ladys garter, which bears a very similar colour and design!! Date: circa 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the somber tones of World War I, a touch of humor emerges in this vintage postcard from circa 1915. The image showcases a man proudly wearing a Derby Armlet, an armband that signified his commitment to join the British Army when called upon under Lord Derby's voluntary conscription scheme. The Derby Scheme was initiated in 1915 as it became clear that volunteer numbers alone would not suffice for the war effort. The man in the postcard, with a mischievous grin, points towards a passing woman, who playfully holds up her garter, which bears a striking resemblance in color and design to the Derby Armlet. The cheeky connection between the two is not lost on the man, as he seems to find amusement in the situation. The saucy and humorous tone of the postcard offers a brief respite from the grim realities of the war. This comic postcard serves as a reminder of the human spirit's ability to find humor and lightness even in the most challenging of times. The Derby Armlet, a symbol of duty and readiness to serve, takes on a new meaning in this context, as the man's flirtatious gesture adds an unexpected layer of wit to the image.
