It was one of the most unusual services ever held in a church. The Rev W.F. Shergold conducted a service of thanksgiving and dedecation for motorcyclists and scooterists in London. He lead the service in the Church of St Mary of Eton, Hackney Wick, E9. Leather jacketed, black booted cyclists filled the church - and some of their bikes came in also to rest beneath the pulpit.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In a remarkable display of unity and gratitude, the Church of St Mary of Eton in Hackney Wick opened its doors to an unconventional congregation. Led by the Reverend W. F. Shergold, motorcyclists and scooterists from all walks of life gathered for a unique service of thanksgiving and dedication. The pews were filled with leather jacketed riders, their black boots echoing through the sacred space. As the sound of engines faded outside, these two-wheeled machines found their place within the hallowed walls, resting beneath the pulpit as if seeking solace themselves. It was a sight that spoke volumes about this community's deep connection to their beloved vehicles. The atmosphere inside was electric yet reverent; prayers mingled with revving engines as hymns soared through stained glass windows. This extraordinary gathering showcased how spirituality can transcend traditional boundaries and embrace diverse passions. Captured in May 1962 by Mirrorpix, this print encapsulates a moment frozen in time - one where faith intertwined with freedom on wheels. Beyond commercial interests or brand affiliations, it celebrates human connections forged through shared experiences and common ground. This image serves as a testament to the power of inclusivity within religious spaces - reminding us that even amidst our differences, we can find harmony when we come together under one roof to celebrate what makes us unique while honoring something greater than ourselves.
