The cat from Dick Whittington seen here being interviewed by Police
The cat from Dick Whittington seen here being interviewed by Police: Huge crowds gathered in a Walthamstow street when the pantomime cat from Dick Whittington at the Palace Theatre, Walthamstow, made an ascent by rope up the front of the theatre. The local traders complained that the crowds obstructed their stalls and prevented Christmas trade being done and the police were called. They spoke to the manager of the theatre and also to the " cat" played by Miss Desta, who is a stunt girl for American films and also a trapeze artist. She is the smallest cat in the panto business - 3ft. 9ins. high and weighs 5 stone. December 1953 D7638-001

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a peculiar scene unfold as the famous cat from Dick Whittington finds itself being interviewed by the police. The Palace Theatre in Walthamstow became the center of attention when crowds flocked to witness an extraordinary spectacle. Scaling up the front of the theater using a rope, this pantomime cat drew immense curiosity and excitement from onlookers. However, amidst all the commotion, local traders voiced their grievances about obstructed stalls and hindered Christmas trade. Consequently, law enforcement was summoned to address these concerns. Both the theater manager and "the cat" herself were questioned by authorities. Interestingly enough, it turns out that Miss Desta portrays this remarkable feline character. Not only is she an actress with experience in American films but also a trapeze artist known for her daring stunts. Standing at just 3 feet 9 inches tall and weighing five stone (70 pounds), she holds the title of being the smallest cat performer in pantomimes. This snapshot from December 1953 captures not only a moment of entertainment but also highlights how even fictional characters can cause real-world disruptions. It serves as a reminder that sometimes even our beloved traditions require careful management to ensure harmony between commerce and amusement within our communities.
