James. Sticking his neck out on a blind date. The Trouble with a shy bachelor like James
James. Sticking his neck out on a blind date. The Trouble with a shy bachelor like James was that he would never come out of his shell. And females, of course, go for the racy type. The sort of chap who carries an upper-crust bearing. To put it bluntly, James was an also-ran at his garden home in Breck-road, Wallasey, Cheshire. Even chatting up his playmate Peggy was like banging his head against a brick wall. So his owner, school teacher Miss Annette Timewell, decided it was high time he struck his neck out and had a blind date. The place: Belle Vue Zoo, Manchester, Lancashire. Where James, bearing a bouquet of hyacinths, was placed alongside one of the zoos star charmers. They nuzzled, chatted about the weather - " last winter was a dream" - and displayed promising signs of a courtship. But after 60 minutes it was obvious that love was not to be. James, it must be admitted, is an utter slow-coach at courting. Miss Timewell also brought along another male tortoise, Fez. But he didn t find love either. She said : " Now I may have to try them with a couple of females from a pet shop." May 1968 P000723

EDITORS COMMENTS
James, the shy bachelor tortoise, takes a leap of faith on a blind date. Despite his best efforts to come out of his shell, James always struggled to catch the attention of females who preferred more daring suitors. Living in his quiet garden home in Breck-road, Wallasey, Cheshire, James found even chatting with his playmate Peggy to be an uphill battle. Determined to help him find love, Miss Annette Timewell, James' owner and a school teacher, decided it was time for him to take a chance on a blind date. The chosen location was Belle Vue Zoo in Manchester, Lancashire where James arrived bearing a bouquet of hyacinths. Placed alongside one of the zoo's star charmers, they engaged in nuzzles and weather discussions - reminiscing about their dreamy winter together. The signs were promising but after an hour it became clear that love wasn't meant to blossom between them. It seemed that James had yet again missed the mark when it came to courtship. Undeterred by this setback, Miss Timewell also introduced another male tortoise named Fez into the mix but alas he too failed to find love at Belle Vue Zoo. With determination still intact she remarked that her next plan would involve introducing them both to female companions from a local pet shop.
