EDITORS COMMENTS
Thames yields harvest of shrimps at Gravesend, Kent - A glimpse into the bustling shrimping industry during World War II. In this print from October 1943, we witness Skipper Henry Sutherland aboard his trusty vessel, the 'Lilian, ' reaping bountiful hauls of succulent shrimps in the Gravesend Reach of the Thames. With skillful precision, these delectable crustaceans are meticulously sieved and cooked in a gleaming copper pot before being carefully cooled and packed into sacks destined for London. The dedication and hard work of these fishermen ensure that fresh seafood reaches the city's tables promptly. This snapshot captures not just an ordinary day on the river but also offers us a glimpse into life on the home front during wartime. It showcases how individuals like Skipper Henry Sutherland played their part in ensuring food security amidst challenging times.
