About 70 employees of the Auto Machinery Company, Aldermmor Lane, Coventry, lined up yesterday to be shot at with anew jet-spray gun loaded with influenza vaccine. In 10 minutes they had all been inoculated by the new method with Influvac, a vaccine which it is hoped, will reduce the incidence of influenza by 65%. A mobile anti-flu team has been visiting many firms in the Midlands, and the new jet-spray method has been devised to deal with large numbers in the shortest possible time. EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in 1964, this print showcases the innovative approach taken by the Auto Machinery Company in Coventry to combat influenza among its workforce. Approximately 70 employees lined up eagerly as they prepared to be 'shot at' with a groundbreaking jet-spray gun loaded with Influvac, a new vaccine aimed at reducing the incidence of flu by an impressive 65%. In just ten minutes, all employees had been inoculated using this efficient method, which involved spraying the vaccine directly through their skin at high speed. This revolutionary technique eliminated the need for traditional hypodermic syringes and allowed for over 300 individuals to be vaccinated per hour. With minimal disruption to production processes, industries across the Midlands were keenly adopting this mobile anti-flu team's services. The significance of such vaccination campaigns cannot be overstated; each year, influenza causes a staggering loss of 20 million workdays due to absenteeism. However, thanks to Influvac's protection lasting up to eight months after administration, companies like Auto Machinery were taking proactive measures against this debilitating illness. This image from Memory Lane Prints serves as a testament not only to scientific progress but also highlights how businesses prioritized employee health and well-being even decades ago. The dedication shown by both employers and workers in combating influenza is truly commendable.
