Goals scored by David Jack two minutes after the start of the match and a second half goal by Jack Smit gave Bolton a two nil victory over the Hammers. The final was preceded by chaotic scenes as vast crowds surged into the stadium, far exceeding its official capacity of approximately 125,000. Its believed a crowd estimated up to 300,000 gained entrance resulting in the terraces overflowing and spectators surging onto the pitch. Mounted policemen, including one on a white horse, had to clear the crowds from the pitch to allow the match to take place. The game began 45 minutes late as crowds stood on the touchline.
