Tynesides No. 1 sportsman Arthur E George, hale and hearty at 73

Tynesides No.1 sportsman Arthur E George, hale and hearty at 73, went out to show the " young uns" how its done today to celebrate his 73rd birthday.
Swimmer " since he could crawl, " skater for 60 years, motorist for 50 years and flier for 40 years, George was each of these in turn between his 6.30am breakfast and 5pm tea.
He began his birthday celebrations in his running trunks. With his old dog at his heels, he trotted round Gosforth Park, then went back home for his bicycle and cycled round.
Next he got out his car (he owns one of Newcastles largest garages) and drove to the city airport. There the mechanics were just getting out his Tiger Moth from Newcastle Flying Club hangar, George was the Clubs first member and he is still its keenest.
The airport weather report was:" Visibility down to 600 feet through thick industrial haze." But George who flies regularly at least three times a week, put on his old flying helmet and a windjammer over his sports suit and took off. " its the healthiest air in Newcastle up here" he shouted from his open cockpit 800 feet up.
When he touched down on the airfield again, he climbed out, took off his flying helmet, jumped in his car, where his dog was on guard over his swimming kit and drove to the City Baths for a swim.
After lunch he made the longer journey to Durham to put in a solid couiple of hours ice skating. Before he went lion-hearted Arthur George said, " Of course, you know, I don t do this everyday. Its just an example to the young uns".

Arthur E George - Tyneside's No. 1 Sportsman Defies Age on His 73rd Birthday

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we see the indomitable Arthur E George, Tyneside's most celebrated sportsman, as he defies age and showcases his remarkable vitality at 73 years old. Determined to prove that age is just a number, George embarked on a day filled with activities to demonstrate his prowess to the younger generation. Starting his birthday celebrations in running trunks, accompanied by his loyal canine companion, he briskly trotted around Gosforth Park before hopping onto his bicycle for an invigorating ride. With one of Newcastle's largest garages under his ownership, George then hopped into his car and drove to the city airport. Despite unfavorable weather conditions and limited visibility due to industrial haze, nothing could deter this seasoned aviator from taking flight in his beloved Tiger Moth aircraft. From the open cockpit at 800 feet above ground level, he enthusiastically proclaimed the air up there as "the healthiest in Newcastle". After landing safely back on terra firma, George swiftly transitioned from pilot to swimmer as he headed straight for the City Baths for a refreshing dip. Following a well-deserved lunch break, our intrepid hero made an extended journey to Durham where he showcased impressive ice skating skills during a solid couple of hours on the rink. With unwavering determination and lion-hearted spirit throughout this action-packed day of adventure and athleticism, Arthur E George humbly remarked that such feats were not part of his daily routine but rather served as an inspiring example for the younger generation who aspire towards greatness in their chosen pursuits.
