PUPILS from Southflelds Junior School, Hillfields, Coventry
PUPILS from Southflelds Junior School, Hillfields, Coventry, are enjoying a term-time stay away from city life for the next two weeks at a " camp site school" in the Warwickshire countryside. Forty-eight of them are attending a field-study course, organised by the school. They have pitched camp in the middle of a field at Holt Farm, Napton-on-the-Hill, near Southam.
After an early call in the morning and a country-style breakfast, the children, aged 10 and 11, take part in country rambles, boating on the canal and visiting nearby farms and quarries. " The object of the course is to give the children a chance to find out about the countryside generally, and to get to know the country code, " said Mr. D. H. Thomas, the headmaster, " Most of them live in the centre of the city.and have very little chance of coming out and visiting the countryside. " We hope we re also doing something for racial harmony year. Half the children who come out here are immigrants, and we feel we re giving children of all nationalities a chance to learn to live together for a time." Twelve children at a time spend three days at the campwhere they are accommodated in caravans and tents with a marquee " cook house" and eating hall. Cooking, washing-up and cleaning chores are shared among the children and the four teachers who are supervising them on the course.
" The country air has certainly done wonders for their appetites, " said Mr. Thomas. " They re eating us out of house and home. And the childrens verdict? " Smashing, " said 11-y ear-old Manjit Singh. " This is the first time I ve ever been to stay in the countryside. It took a bit of getting used to at first sleeping in a tent and having lessons in the open air, but its so nice to be away from all the noise and pollution of the city. :I think I ll become a farmer when I grow up." " The foods great as well, " added Charanjit Singh, aged 11. " We ve all had a great time and will be so sorry to leave. I think we ve learned more out here tha
