Giorgio Chinaglia, who moved to Cardiff as a young child with his family from Italy

Giorgio Chinaglia, who moved to Cardiff as a young child with his family from Italy, waves farewell to Swansea and reluctantly sets off for a new soccer career in Italy - April 1966.
HE was a rascal, a rebel, a Cardiffian and iabove all iunforgettable. Yesterday, the footballing world paid tribute one of its most colourful characters, Giorgio Chinaglia, who died aged 65. Chinaglia iknown affectionately as iong Johniand as the Italian George Best iwas found dead at his home in Florida by his adopted son at 9am US eastern time on Saturday. He had suffered complications following treatment for a heart problem. Chinaglia was born in the Tuscan marble town of Carrara shortly after the end of World War II, and moved to Cardiff when he was nine as his father looked for work in the steelworks. His association with football began in a traditional way iplaying in the back lanes of Canton where he lived

EDITORS COMMENTS
Giorgio Chinaglia: A Footballing Legend Remembered". In this photo print, Giorgio Chinaglia bids farewell to Swansea as he embarks on a new soccer career in Italy. Born in Carrara, Italy, after World War II, Chinaglia moved to Cardiff with his family at a young age. He quickly became an integral part of the community, known for his mischievous nature and rebellious spirit. Affectionately called "Long John" and compared to the iconic George Best, Chinaglia left an indelible mark on the footballing world. Yesterday, tributes poured in from all corners as news broke of his passing at 65 years old. His adopted son discovered him lifeless at their Florida home following complications from heart treatment. Chinaglia's journey began playing football in the back lanes of Canton where he resided. From those humble beginnings emerged a talent that would take him far beyond Wales' borders. This photograph captures not only his youthfulness but also reflects the vibrant culture of the 1960s with its references to mods, parkas, scooters - symbols of youth rebellion and style. As we gaze upon this image today, let us remember Giorgio Chinaglia as more than just a talented athlete; he was a rascal who defied expectations and embraced life fully. His legacy will forever be etched into football history.
