Five sporty schoolgirls have kicked off shining careers in a traditionally all-male

Five sporty schoolgirls have kicked off shining careers in a traditionally all-male preserve.... rugby. All from Castle Hall Middle, Mirfield, they have proved they can run, kick and pass with the best of them. For the past weeks, they have been hard at work beating their boy classmates at their own game and practising for an award scheme being run at the school. The school plays a new style of rugby called new image - a non-contact sport which both sexes of all ages can play - without losing out to size or strength. The girls, from left: Sonia Kaye, Kelly Hudson, Sarah Roberts, Farrah Greig and Louise Morby, are seen accepting bronze training medals from David Spawforth (left), Kirklees and South Yorkshire rugby union development officer. 31st October 1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a groundbreaking moment as five sporty schoolgirls defy gender norms and embark on shining careers in the traditionally all-male world of rugby. Hailing from Castle Hall Middle School in Mirfield, these determined young ladies have proven that they can hold their own against anyone when it comes to running, kicking, and passing. Over the past weeks, they have tirelessly honed their skills by outperforming their male classmates and preparing for an award scheme at their school. What makes their achievement even more remarkable is that they are playing a new style of rugby called new image - a non-contact sport that allows both sexes of all ages to participate without being hindered by size or strength. In this heartwarming snapshot, we see Sonia Kaye, Kelly Hudson, Sarah Roberts, Farrah Greig, and Louise Morby proudly accepting bronze training medals from David Spawforth – Kirklees and South Yorkshire rugby union development officer. Their beaming smiles radiate with joy and accomplishment as they pave the way for future generations of female athletes. This photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also represents the spirit of progressiveness within education and sports during the 1980s in West Yorkshire. It serves as a testament to the power of determination and breaking down barriers while reminding us that no dream is too big or too bold for those who dare to chase it.
