The vicar walked towards the gipsy camp in the wood. When he got level with the leading caravan, he called out: " I m the" local parson. I just happened to be passing, and I wondered whether there was anything I could do to help." A few days later a message-was delivered to the rambling stone vicarage at Eridge Green, Sussex, it said : " Some of the gipsies in the wood would like to be baptised." So the vicar, the Rev. John Stuart Yorke, brought out his old car. Into the back he put a folding table, an altar cloth, a small cross, and a portable font. When he arrived at the forest he set up a small altar against a background of caravans, Then he baptised three Smiths, three Bakers, two Jameses and four Joneses, eleven children and one grown-up. The youngest was Jimmy Smith, seen in the vicars arms. Jimmy was born six weeks ago. 27th April 1955

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a heartwarming encounter between the local vicar and a gipsy camp nestled within the enchanting woods. As the vicar approached the leading caravan, he introduced himself as the parish's clergyman and offered his assistance to these nomadic souls. Little did he know that his kind gesture would lead to an extraordinary event. A few days later, a message arrived at the rambling stone vicarage in Eridge Green, Sussex. It conveyed an unexpected request from some of the gipsies residing in the wood - they wished to be baptized. Without hesitation, Reverend John Stuart Yorke prepared for this sacred occasion. Loading his trusty old car with essential items including a folding table, altar cloth, small cross, and portable font; Rev. Yorke embarked on a journey back into the forest. Against a picturesque backdrop of caravans stood a humble makeshift altar where he conducted baptisms. The photograph captures one such moment of pure joy and faith as Rev. Yorke cradles little Jimmy Smith in his arms during baptismal rites. Born just six weeks prior to this significant day on April 27th, 1955; Jimmy represents hope for both his family and their tight-knit community. This image serves as a testament to unity beyond societal boundaries and showcases how religion can bridge gaps between different cultures and ways of life. It is through acts of compassion like these that true connections are forged amidst diversity.
