Tobys in the doghouse. 19th March 1954
They took my temperature and they said, Toby " you re a sick dog." So into a cubicle at the animals hospital I went. They gave me the odd shot of penicillin and now they say my temperatures going down and I ll soon be fit enough to go home. I can t say I ll be sorry to leave this doghouse. Mind you, the treatments wonderful and hospitals like this one, run by the Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals, at llford (Essex), are a real boon to pet-owners who can t afford a " vet s" treatment. But I love the wide open spaces. And I m rarin to get past
these bars

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Tobys in the doghouse. 19th March 1954" we catch a glimpse of Toby, an adorable basset hound, during his stay at the animal hospital. The image captures the essence of Toby's experience as he recovers from illness under the care of the dedicated staff at Ilford's Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). With a touch of humor and nostalgia, Toby narrates his journey through this temporary confinement. Having been diagnosed as a sick dog, he finds solace in knowing that his temperature is gradually decreasing thanks to the penicillin shots administered by compassionate veterinarians. As much as he appreciates their excellent treatment, Toby longs for freedom and yearns to return to wide open spaces beyond these confining bars. The photograph not only highlights Toby's personal story but also sheds light on the invaluable service provided by PDSA hospitals like this one in Essex during the 1950s. These charitable institutions were lifelines for pet owners who couldn't afford traditional veterinary care. Bela Zola skillfully captures both the vulnerability and resilience of animals while emphasizing their importance within our society. This charming snapshot from Memory Lane Prints transports us back to a time when animal welfare was still evolving and reminds us of how far we've come in ensuring our beloved pets receive proper medical attention regardless of financial constraints or circumstances.
