EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1945, a time when war-torn Guernsey was slowly recovering from the clutches of German occupation. In this frame, we see "Herald" the Champion Bull of Maple Lodge, Guernsey, proudly standing tall at six years and seven months old. Owned by E. D. Falla of Castel, Herald's story is one that resonates with bravery and resilience. During the occupation, when Germans sought to export cattle to the mainland, Herald became a symbol of defiance. He was hidden away from their prying eyes in haystacks or secret locations whenever danger loomed near. Now recognized as the Island's Champion Bull by the Northern Agricultural Society of Guernsey, Herald stands as a testament to strength amidst adversity. In this heartwarming image captured on September 13th, 1945, little Anne le Feuvre fearlessly poses beside Herald. Her innocent smile reflects an unwavering trust in this gentle giant despite his imposing stature. The juxtaposition between her petite figure and his massive presence evokes both humor and admiration. This photograph not only encapsulates a moment frozen in time but also represents liberation and triumph over conflict during World War II. It serves as a reminder that even amidst chaos and uncertainty, there are moments of beauty found within unlikely places – like an unbreakable bond between a young girl and her bovine companion named Herald.
