British Battlecruiser HMS Penelope, who was recently the chief target of some of
British Battlecruiser HMS Penelope, who was recently the chief target of some of the heaviest raids on the Mediterranean island of Malta during the Second World War. On putting to sea, she was repeatedly attacked by both German and Italian dive and torpedo bombers. The whole of this time her guns were almost continuously in action and to such good effect that the ship escaped with only superficial damage from splinters.
She set sail for Gibraltar on 8th, arriving on 10th April, with further damage from near-misses and was visited by the Duke of Gloucester on 11th April, who had originally laid down her keel plate.
Picture shows: The ships company on her starboard side in good spirits after the ordeal. Note the hundreds of splinter holes, some filled with wood.
